beating the jungle don't look up, don't look down

TIME OF
by Gary Jacobson

Oh, the mad dogs grimly march forward blindly
Bringing heinous death barbarously
Vying for victory in this land of fevered sun
Abiding cruel savagery's knowing gun.

O can’t you hear war’s impassioned madness
God’s armies bearing hostility's ardent absurdness?
Pounding warguns shake the earth beneath.
War swords shriek as instruments of death unsheathe.
Hear a thousand warriors' tramping feet.
Strident trumpets blare an ever-harsh beat
Cacophonies that will never sound retreat.

Warriors at the fore to politicos will sacrificial
Low account expendable
Dross,
Where sure death will not to cross
Nor to force of arms yield...
Stamp ever onward through fertile field.

The Bible foretold of this grave battlefield
White and already to harvest
Of gory battlegrounds where soldiers humanity divest
Just boys answering the call do their best...
Led by true patriots
Militants...
Just a job honing hawkish skills
Ego never getting in the way of adventurous drills
To the ways of war proponent
Bloodshed's advocate...
Seeking glory narcissistic
In evil carnage bombastic...
Currying lauded praises with superior air arrogant.
Carrying axioms old as the hills proof postulate...

Nothing like a good war gives to life its flavor...
Never mind humanity's cost melancholic...
A show of force will at the ballot-box politicians savor
To poll the misinformed will of the people bucolic
Partisans too often make war to gain political favor.

Of reasoning mindless...
Of all trappings of power heedless,
War's specter rides roughshod over victims powerless,
Blowing Hell-bent on scourging winds afore
Lusty battalions carnivore
Infantry pawns, forsaken dogs of war,
Molding in potter’s fields with gnashing teeth
Gory spoils of war to bequeath
Their lives balanced in corporate divestiture
Abandoned in a state of grim foreclosure...

No man can stem battle’s terrible maelstrom
Forestall creeping shadows of coming doom
Bring down banners spewing hate
Lay still the hands of fetid fate
Will warfare’s horrors consummate
Assuage people's dueling for systematic genocide
For flaring nostrils bear hatred’s tide
Planting man’s inhumanity to man biocide.

War's madness comes to naïve sons slashing,
Into hearts maliciously slicing,
Deep down into darkened earth innocence swallows
Gouging in wounded souls cavernous hollows.

O, will you but honor the death which will befall us
Men carrying before the shield of Holy Angelus?
For we assuredly fight for right
In strength and power of most Holy might.
Fearing war’s madness will ever come calling
Amid sword-beating and macho trumpeting
To pluck from generations brightest flower of men
Filling whited sepulchers again and yet again.

Answer the trumpet's call from misdirected veneration
Generation after generation
Shackled to repeat the madness
Weeping and tearing
With disconsolate sadness...
Fight to disburse maddening evil hiding within us
Forever spreading war’s contagious virus...
Boiling over again and yet again...
